Tell me a little about you, your family, where you went to school or received training, your work, hobbies.

I am a third generation Mexican American on my mother's side. My family are all from the Chicago area, and my immediate family consists of myself, my mom, my stepfather, and my older sister. As a family we cross three nationalities: Mexican, Italian, and Ukrainian. This might be why I developed a curiosity about cultures and why things were as they were.

I have a BA in English from UIC, because when I was younger I was determined to become a writer. I also have a MSLIS from UIUC and became a librarian by profession, because I wanted to be passionate about my day job and feel like I was giving back. I currently manage the Adult Services Department (including teens) at the Aurora Public Library District. I love the work and the community, but not so much the commute. I also like living closer to my family (and to the ZLMC!).

My hobbies have changed over the years, from art and writing to reading, hiking and cooking as circumstances in life changed. On sunny days I feel compelled to get outdoors.

What brought you to ZLMC?

I have been meditating for a number of years now, at least since 2019, and during the pandemic I grew curious about ZLMC. A long while back a friend recommended I check it out, after I mentioned that, being agnostic, I missed having a spiritual home.  I'd been brought up Catholic but over time I shed those doctrines and no longer felt comfortable with the church.

What is your spiritual practice?

Meditation is a spiritual practice for me, also walking in nature, especially when I can get to a quiet and remote patch away from noise. I have also been practicing more gratitude when I can.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I'm still in the early stages of learning about Zen and appreciate the openness and patience I experience in this Sangha. This is a great community!
