Roshi June Ryushin Tanoue
Roshi June Ryushin Tanoue, co-founder of Zen Life & Meditation Center with her husband, Roshi Robert Joshin Althouse, has been practicing Zen since 1993. She received Shukke Tokudo as a novitiate Zen Priest from her teacher Roshi Robert Joshin Althouse on June 2, 2007. She received Transmission on October 12, 2014 and was fully empowered as a Zen Teacher (Sensei) and a Zen Buddhist Priest. She is also an empowered Zen Life Instructor and began the Prison Ministry teaching meditation for detainees at the Cook County Department of Corrections in 2017. On December 27, 2022, she received Inka (final approval) from her teacher as a Roshi.
June is a Kumu Hula (Master Teacher of Hula). She founded her hula school called Halau I Ka Pono, the Hula School of Chicago in September 2009. Mindful movement in this cultural dance tradition is taught to ages 5 - 90.
June has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from University of Redlands and a Master's in Public Health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She spent nearly 25 years in food banking in Portland, Oregon; Hawaii Island; and with Feeding America in Chicago. She spent another 5 years working in the grant making community with USA for Africa and the Hawaii Community Foundation.
